4 Simple Reasons Why You Have Those Sunken Eyes

Are you working the night shifts or sleep deprived? If yes, then you probably have hollow, sunken eyes. This may make you look tired and unhealthy. There are other reasons for your eyes to appear sunken.

Causes Of Sunken Eyes

1. Lack Of Sleep

We all know the usual phrase “we all need at least eight hours of sleep.” Sleep is important for both the mind and body. Lack of sleep can cause sunken eyes with dark circles around them. Sleep deprivation is one of the top causes of sunken eyes.
Sunken eyes tell that you have been missing out on proper sleep during the night. A sound sleep at night is not the same as sleeping during the day. Make sure you sleep for a minimum of eight hours at night to avoid unhealthy, sunken eyes.

2. Unbalanced Weight Loss

If you are on a self-made diet plan that makes you skip meals, then you might want to make changes to your diet plan. Diets are healthy as long as they are provided by experts. Skipping meals may help in losing weight faster, but it is not healthy. Your body is denied the energy it needs for the day. This will appear in the form of sunken eyes.

As you lose weight, you also begin to lose fat on your face. This makes your eyes look hollow. If you lose a lot of fat, the reddish-blue blood vessels, especially the ones surrounding your face, appear more transparent, making the area around your eyes look darker.
Maintaining a healthy method of weight loss will be helpful and your sunken eyes may not look hollow with a proper diet plan.

3. Dehydration

If you lose fluids from your body due to heat, then you are in a state of dehydration. Dehydration will not only make you feel exhausted, it will also be visible physically. When you are dehydrated, your skin loses its elasticity and becomes dry, making the circles under your eyes more visible. Sunken eyes may be caused due to dehydration. Dehydration disrupts the normal functions of the body.

Drinking lots of water will keep the body hydrated. When dehydrated, drinking water mixed with both sugar and salt can help will supply your body with fluids as well as electrolytes.

Dehydration is common in the elderly. Older people are vulnerable to dehydration due to physiological changes in the aging process. Age-related changes include a reduced sensation of thirst. Swallowing difficulties, dementia, and poorly controlled diabetes are more common in older people and are all associated with poor hydration.

4. Nutrition Deficiency

Very often malnutrition is responsible for sunken eyes and dark under-eye patches.

Vitamin C deficiency is a reason for sunken eyes. Vitamin C is required in the form of collagen. Collagen is responsible for the overall look of your skin. One of the most common signs of vitamin C deficiency is the spontaneous rupture of capillaries, which leads to bruising. This, accompanied by the unhealthy skin, makes your eyes look sunken. Consuming vitamin-rich foods is necessary. These foods include oranges, kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, strawberries, and others.

Vitamin K deficiency may cause sunken eyes. Vitamin K is responsible for blood clotting. It also strengthens the walls of the capillaries, preventing them from breaking. This deficiency not only impairs the formation of blood clots but also puts you at risk of bruising if there is a breakage of capillaries. Green leafy vegetables, spring onions, cabbage, cucumbers, and others are good sources of vitamin K.

Iron deficiency may also cause sunken eyes. Iron is a component of haemoglobin and haemoglobin gives the red colour to your blood. If haemoglobin is lower in the red blood cells, then there is a deficiency of iron in your body. The blood will not appear red, and this will be easily visible through the thin, delicate skin under the eyes. This will make your eyes look sunken with dark circles. Adding iron-rich foods to your diet should help with this problem. Sources of iron include red meat, seafood, beans, dark green leafy vegetables, dry fruits, and others.

A good sleep at night, sufficient water intake, and a balanced, healthy diet can help you if you have sunken eyes. If you have been following this and your sunken eyes and dark circles still remain, then you should visit a doctor and take the necessary steps.

10 Proven Everyday Healthy Lifestyle Tips

1. Practice Healthy Eating.

Healthy Salad Ingredients Wow, is that general enough for you? To put it as simply as possible, eating healthy means not eating the foods that are harmful to your body. But there's more.

Add to your diet the foods that are beneficial to your body. That's not all - how, when and why you eat also affect your health! I give you lots more information and guidance on eating in my eating guidelines, eating tips, and healthy snack ideas pages. Please read them! Educate yourself!

Two Important Eating Changes To Start With:
Eliminate any food containing partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.
Add almonds to your diet (for more info, see my list of healthy food).

2. Drink The Right Beverages.

Orange Juice If you're a soda pop drinker, start weaning yourself off of it. Why? If you drink diet sodas, the artificial sweeteners may be harming your health (my dangerous food additives page gives more info).

All non-diet sodas are so loaded with sugar you'll start your blood sugar on a roller-coaster ride - not good. And the carbonation and phosphoric acid (especially in colas) contribute to osteoporosis, a debilitating bone disease.

A Healthy Beverage Change to Start With:
If you're a soda pop drinker, drink half as much soda as you normally would and start drinking more water (add a splash of citrus or pomegranate juice to it if you don't like plain water).

3. Keep a Food Journal.

Nutrition Journal This is considered by many to be one of the most helpful healthy lifestyle tips. Don't only write down what you eat, but the circumstances surrounding it - where, when, why, how you felt before eating, how you felt after eating, how hungry you were before, how hungry you were after.

If you're eating too much (check out my page on food portion size for more details), or eating unhealthy foods with the knowledge that they're harmful to your health, journaling is an excellent way to understand why you're doing this to yourself. When you figure out why you can help yourself.

Start With This:
Buy an attractive journal that you will enjoy writing in. If you feel like starting to journal about your eating, do it. Write as little or as much as you like. A good place to start? Write a note about what you ate and WHY you ate it (were you hungry, bored, anxious, feeling bad about yourself, wanting to reward yourself?).

4. Supplement with Vitamins and Minerals.

Vitamin Symbols Because of our modern lifestyles and the way our foods are now grown and produced, it's hard for any of us to get all the vitamins and minerals in quantities that will actually benefit us.

Begin With These Supplements:
Start supplementing with Vitamin D, especially if you're dark-skinned, live in a part of the world that doesn't get a lot of suns, or don't spend much time outside (read my page on the Benefits of Vitamin D for more information on this amazing vitamin).
Has your vitamin D level tested if possible? In any event, a good Vitamin D dosage to start with is 1,000 IU per day (go for Vitamin D3).
Calcium Citrate Bottle - Benefits of Calcium
Vitamin D Capsules - Benefits of Vitamin D
Magnesium Chemical Element - Benefits of Magnesium

5. Take Other Proven Supplements.

Two such supplements are Omega 3 fatty acids (found in wild salmon and krill oils), and Turmeric
(often found as curcumin in supplement form).

For Right Now:

Start supplementing with Turmeric Curcumin with Bioperine ( black pepper extract). More than 600 health benefits of Turmeric for everything you need to know about this wonderful herb. When shopping for it, look for whole curcumin (rather than isolated), standardized for 95% curcuminoids. Take 400 - 600 mg, two times per day.

9 Healthy Reasons to Eat Kiwifruit

The kiwifruit or Chinese gooseberry People are attracted to kiwifruit because of its brilliant green color and exotic taste. But, the real uniqueness of kiwi fruit comes from its health benefits. Kiwi is in the ‘low’ category for glycemic index, meaning it does not raise your blood sugar quickly. It has a glycemic load of 4 which means it is safe for diabetics. A medium size kiwifruit (76 grams) provides 46 calories, 0.3 g fat, 1 g protein, 11 g carbohydrates, and 2.6 g dietary fiber found partly in the edible skin. Kiwi is also in the ‘most alkaline’ category for fruits, meaning it has a rich supply of minerals to replace the excess of acidic foods most individuals consume. A few of the benefits of a properly acid/alkaline balanced body are: youthful skin, deeper sleep, abundant physical energy, fewer colds, less arthritis, and reduced osteoporosis. The actinidin found in kiwifruit can be an allergen for some individuals. The most common symptoms are unpleasant itching and soreness of the mouth, with the most common severe symptom being wheezing, with anaphylaxis also being reported.

1. Kiwi Helps To Clean Out Your Toxins

The fuzzy fiber of Kiwi helps bind and move toxins from your intestinal tract.

2. To Help Your Digestions

Raw kiwi contains actinidain, a protein-dissolving enzyme that can help digest a meal much like the papain in papaya or bromelain in pineapple. Kiwis are a great source of fiber. This prevents constipation and other intestinal problems.

3. Helps Manage Blood Pressure

Kiwi’s high level of potassium helps keep our electrolytes in balance by counteracting the effects of sodium.

4. Protects from DNA Damage

A study by Collins, Horska and Hotten showed that the unique combination of antioxidants in Kiwi fruit helps protect the cell DNA from oxidative damage. Some experts conclude this can help prevent cancer.

5. Boosts Your Immunity

Kiwi’s high vitamin C content along with other antioxidant compounds has been proven to boost the immune system.

6. Smart Carb for Weight Loss

Kiwi’s low glycemic index and high fiber content means it will not create a strong insulin rush like other fruit with high sugar contents — so the body will not respond by storing fat.

7. Helps Fight Heart Disease

Eating 2-3 kiwis a day has been shown to reduce the potential of blood clotting by 18% and reduce triglycerides by 15%. Many individuals take aspirin to reduce blood clotting, but this causes many side effects including inflammation and intestinal bleeding. Kiwi fruit has the same anti-clotting benefits with no side effects, just additional health benefits!

8. Protects Against Macular Degeneration and Other Eye Problems

Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in older adults. A study on over 110,000 men and women showed that eating 3 or more serving of fruit per day decreased macular degeneration by 36%. This is thought to be associated with the kiwi’s high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin — both of which are natural chemicals found in the human eye. Although both fruits and vegetables were studied, this same effect was not shown for vegetables.

9. Great for the Skin

Kiwis are a good source of vitamin E, an antioxidant known to protect skin from degeneration.
