8 Creative Ways to Burn More Fat at Work

Are you trying to set time aside before or after work for fat burning exercise? And how is that working for you? Do you get home and make dinner only to realize that there is just simply no time left in the day for exercise? If I told you could slip extra exercise into your work routine, I'm sure you would be interested!
Well here are a couple of tips you can use to burn fat at work:

1. Leave your car at home! - If you live close enough to work, try walking to work or even cycling. In fact, walking is one of the easiest and healthiest ways of burning fat.

2. Stand more - because of standing burns off fat than sitting, try looking for opportunities to stand rather than sitting. You can do this by switching your 'sitting desk' to a 'standing desk,' standing while eating your lunch and also walking to another department in your company instead of messaging/calling them.

3. Have a break have a... fitness break! - Instead of hanging out in the lounge with coffee and snacks at the tea/coffee break time, go for a stroll outside or do some stretching. This also improves your diet by cutting out on all the sugar that is usually associated with this break time.

4. Use a fitness ball instead of a chair - this might seem odd but is a great way to burn fat, if you can balance, that is. Also, you will be building your core muscles which in turn will help in the fat burning process.

5. Keep hand weights at your desk - Do a couple of arm curls in between meetings. You can even mix it up by keeping other exercise equipment such as stretchy cords that provide resistance when you pull on them.

6. Create a lunchtime walking group - this is a great exercise for your lunch break, get a few work colleagues together and go for a walk! And on the plus side if you are a very social person you will love this part of your work day while burning fat!

7. Do a couple of 'walking meetings' - Instead of meeting or brainstorming at a desk, if it is practical to get up and do it on the go. And besides, if it is new ideas you are looking for, then the extra blood flow will definitely help the creativity juices.

8. Get there faster - if you are lucky enough to have a job that involves a lot of walking, then pick up the pace, and you will burn more calories.

Well there you go, as long as you aren't wasting any time at work, these tips will definitely you on your weight loss journey. You probably aren't going to replace all your 'after hour exercise' with these tips, but they will definitely make up what you are missing on the odd occasions and can get you past those few extra stubborn pounds.

Bloated all of the time? Most people have no idea it could be this ‘natural’ sugar-free sweetener

So you’ve cut out all the usual suspects when it comes to bloating like cruciferous vegetables, legumes, and dairy, but you’re still feeling the effects of a bubble belly. One culprit that people often overlook is that of their natural sweetener. They are found in things like gum, and baking goods and are often added to drinks like tea or coffee. They are products like Erythritol and xylitol.
These things make your food sweet and are known as sugar alcohols. Being lower in calories, they are an excellent way to control your caloric intake all the while enjoying something sweet. And if you have diabetes they are a great way of managing your after meal blood sugar spikes as they are low on the glycemic index. When compared to sugar they contain a fraction of the calories and still function as a sweetening agent. Erythritol contains just 0.2 calories per gram and xylitol contains 2.4 calories per gram. And they do not contribute to dental plaque.

Molecular structure
They are called sugar alcohols because molecularly speaking they have things in common with both. Like sugars, they have a hydroxyl group (O-H) on every carbon atom in the chain. But they are different from regular sugars in that they do not have end carbonyl groups (C=O). Instead, they have end hydroxyl groups which are more like alcohol. In Erythritol the OH group is bonded to the first carbon atom of the molecule instead of the carbonyl. Due to its chemical structure, erythritol is absorbed much less by our body and provides much less energy.

Erythritol extraction

The Erythritol we use is produced at an industrial scale using corn as a starting material. With a hydrolysis process, the starch from corn is broken down into smaller glucose molecules. Then the glucose must be fermented to achieve erythritol. A fungus is introduced to the glucose, Moniliella pollens, and it performs the fermentation. At this stage, the glucose carbonyl group is connected to a hydroxyl group, and the molecule goes from 6 carbon atoms to just 4. The product is then purified through several steps where fermentation materials are removed.

Xylitol extraction

Xylitol, on the other hand, is also made from corn. The source material is called xylan and needs to be broken down in a process called acid hydrolyzing. This requires a high temperature and a catalyst known as Raney nickel. After this process known as hydrogenation, we are left with xylose and acetic acid. The acidic acid needs to be removed, and this is done by heating it so it can evaporate. The resulting syrup is pure xylose which must be stabilized into a crystallized sugar alcohol by mixing it with ethanol. A few spins in a centrifuge later and you’ve got xylitol.

Sugar alcohols in your stomach

However, the main thing to note about sugar alcohols likes erythritol and xylitol are that they are not absorbed by the body in the same way as regular sugar. They are often passed into the stomach where they ferment. Xylitol and Erythritol are both known as FODMAP’s (fermentable, oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols) which means some people cannot digest them in the small intestine. When they reach the colon, the flora there break it down and ferment it, which makes a significant amount of gas. Some can consume both of these without consequences while others suffer from near IBS like symptoms.

Alternatives

So if you’ve been drinking lots of erythritol or xylitol in your coffee or tea and are feeling tremendously bloated as a result, don’t worry other options are just as sweet. Stevia, which is a plant from South America has been bred for a long time due it’s sweet nature. If you buy it in a store, you are getting a refined version, but the benefits are the same. It’s been shown to reduce blood pressure, lower blood sugar in diabetics, and may even prevent heart disease.
Another option is monk fruit sweeteners, which are 300-400 times sweeter than traditional cane sugar. It contains no calories and has no effect on blood sugar. It has been known to fight free radicals and lower risk of obesity and diabetes while acting as an anti-inflammatory.
Remember that sugar alcohol are not processed in the body the same way as traditional sweeteners, and they might be the culprit behind your bloating. Feel free to indulge your sweet tooth without fear of bloating or gas with natural alternatives like stevia or monk fruit.

Body Odor As An Indication To Sickness

Body Odor And Health

Do you know that the scent emitted by a person may be one of the first important clues leading to an early diagnosis? For centuries, body odor of humans has been used as a diagnostic tool in the medicine practice. Ancient Greek and Chinese civilizations used body scent to detect infectious diseases such as tuberculosis.

Body smell emanates not only from the skin but also the breath, blood, urine and other body fluids. It can reveal a lot about a person’s health and can be used to identify sickness to a certain extent. According to a Swedish research study by Karolinska Institutet, humans can smell sickness in somebody whose immune system is very active. This ability occurred within just a few hours of exposure to a bacterial endotoxin. “However, in this current study, we have studied the ability of humans to detect disease by smell”, Says Professor Mats J. Olsson, who led the study. “Being able to detect these smells would represent a critical adaptation that would allow us to avoid potentially dangerous illnesses. The question we asked ourselves in this study was whether such an adaptation might exist already at an early stage of the disease, thereby reflecting a biomarker for illness”.

Illnesses and Their Unique Smell

The Research of Professor Olsson and his team suggests that certain illnesses have their characteristic odors.
  • Schizophrenia and several rare inborn metabolism errors, caused by enzyme deficiencies, are revealed by a distinctive body odor.
  • Scrofula, an infection of the lymph nodes, smells like stale beer.
  • Yellow fever can cause a smell of raw meat.
  • An overactive thyroid gland can also cause stinky body odor.
  • Dysfunction in the kidneys and liver can cause a bleach-like smell.
  • Skin conditions such as vagabond’s disease, infected eczema, herpes labialis, and herpes zoster are linked with an unpleasant smell.
  • Syphilis can produce a strong fishy smell.
  • Diabetes emits a fruity aroma similar to that of decomposing apples. This is usually associated with the smell of ketones on the patient’s breath. The sweat also has a specific odor.
  • People with typhoid are reported to emit a smell comparable to that of freshly baked bread.
  • Gingivitis, tonsillitis, and Vincent’s angina can produce a rotten breath smell.
  • People with diphtheria emit a sweetish odor.
  • People suffering from uremia have a urine-like odor in their breath. It is called uremic fetor and is generated by the production of ammonia in the saliva.
  • Osteomyelitis provokes a fetid odor.
  • Diseases of the respiratory tract such as bronchiectasis, lung abscesses, and ozena are also associated with unpleasant smells.

How does Sickness Provoke Body Smell?

Diseases trigger chemical modifications in the body, accompanied by the production of different metabolic compounds. These changes in body chemistry result in various body odors. In the Swedish study, the link between smell and immune activation was to a certain extent associated with the increased level of cytokines. That means, the greater a participant’s immune response is, the more unpleasant odor he or she has. The results of this study strongly support the belief that ill people emit a chemical signal as a part of the sickness response. This body cue can be perceived by others.

When should you visit the doctor about body odor?

Some medical conditions may change how much a person sweats, while others can alter how we sweat, subsequently changing the way we smell. For example, hyperthyroidism (an over-active thyroid gland) can make people sweat much more, while liver and kidney diseases or diabetes can change the consistency of sweat so that the ill person smells differently. You should visit your doctor if:
  • You start sweating at night without any logical reason;
  • You sweat much more than you normally do;
  • You get cold sweats;
  • Sweating disturbs your daily routine;
  • Your body smells differently.
Body odor may in some cases be simply physiological. It can be associated with poor personal hygiene or strongly smelling foods such as garlic. However, there are proofs that, in some instances, bad body scent can be pathological and connected to a disease. The ability to detect body smells would help us avoid potentially dangerous illnesses. Ongoing research on smell diagnoses, electronic noses and “super smellers” like trained dogs is an enormous step in the right direction.
