An Egg Yolk a Day Can Keep the Doctor Away

In a weight-obsessed world, we are mostly told to ditch cholesterol-rich foods, including eggs and their yolks. But science has proven that ditching this part of an egg will do you no good. While it is indeed high in fat and cholesterol, it is actually the most nutritious part that you should definitely consume. Whether you’re on a diet or not, here are the top reasons to eat egg yolks:
1. Incredibly Nutritious
When you eat an egg yolk, you get the following nutrients:
-Choline, which is a B vitamin that is crucial for brain development.
-Lutein and zeaxanthin, which are carotenoids (antioxidants) that help improve or retain vision and more -importantly, fight macular degeneration.
-Vitamins, such as vitamin A, folate, B5, B6, B12, D, E, and K are also present in the egg yolk.
-Minerals, such as selenium, phosphorus, zinc, and calcium are also in the yolk.
2. High in Cholesterol
For some, this is a reason to ditch egg yolk, but eggs don’t affect blood cholesterol that much. In fact, eating more eggs can cause the liver to produce less cholesterol. Eggs can actually raise HDL, which is the good cholesterol that can lower risks for stroke and heart disease.
3. High in Protein
Egg yolks come with good quality protein and essential amino acids in balanced ratios. Protein is needed by the body as it is used to create molecules and tissues for functional and structural purposes. Therefore, getting enough protein is vital and can even aid in weight loss, while increasing muscle mass.
4. Fulfilling
As mentioned, eggs and their yolk can help you lose weight. This is because they are extremely fulfilling due to their high protein content. You will feel satiated and this can cause you to eat fewer calories.
Choosing Your Yolk
Yolks are definitely not created equal. You surely want to get the best and that means eating egg yolks that are bright orange. Avoid those that are yellow because they are from caged hens that did not receive good, natural diet.
Eggs are good for the body and you shouldn’t throw away egg yolks just to avoid gaining weight. You can eat a dozen eggs every week because they are easy on the stomach and are quite versatile as well. But moderation is still important since it is high in fat and cholesterol. Still, there is no evidence that eating a lot of eggs every day can be harmful. This cheap, healthy food should definitely be a part of your diet.

The Color of The Yolk Can Tell You If The Egg Came From A Healthy Chicken

We all know that eating eggs is very good for your body. However, do you know how to tell that you are actually buying good quality eggs? After reading this short story, you’ll be able to distinguish between the good and the not so good cartons of eggs.

A woman bought eggs from three different places. The first box was bought from a local farmer, the second carton was purchased at the market, and the eggs were from pure grain fed free range chickens, and the third container was bought at a big chain supermarket.

She took the eggs from the first box and cracked them into a frying pan. She then did the same thing with the eggs from the second carton.
After cracking eggs from the first two cartons into the frying pan, she took the eggs from the third carton--the one's from the big chain supermarket--and cracked them into the frying pan. It's then that she noticed the difference between the three types of eggs.

Do you notice the color of the yolks? The egg that was straight from the farmer is a rich orange, while the other two eggs have a dull yellow yolk. The orange yolk is the type that you want to eat. Eggs with darker yolks have more nutritional value, as some studies have shown that they have more omega-3s and vitamins and less cholesterol.

But why are there two different types of yolks? Well, the color is influenced mainly by the hen’s diet. Free-range hens that eat a varied diet of grains, bugs and other organic matter tend to produce more flavorful eggs with deeper colored yolks, compared to those that eat factory chicken feed.

And of course, the healthier the hen is, the better the eggs are, and the better for your overall health. The rich orange yolk is the egg you want to try and find.
